Reading and Viewing Check

1. In "Lives Lost" Dotson uses stand up by showing the audience the gym where the four girls participated in their activities. The techniques used to get soundbites from the children were the non-question/ question and filling the silence. By using the non-question/ question Dotson got some of the boys to admit that they had a crush on Natalie. By filling the silence Dotson got the children to extend their answer and give a more detailed answer.

2. In "Cave Rescue" my favorite line is the opening when Dotson describes what it was like for Emily Mobley in the cave.

3. In "Ruby Bridges" Dotson set the scene by bringing Ruby back to her old classroom that was like a prison to her. He showed foreshadowing by using a soundbite in the opening that gave you a hint as to what was going to come later in the story. "Ruby Bridges is back in a classroom that once ... was her prison." The conflict of Dotson's story is that Ruby faces a mob, her parents get divorced and her father loses his job. For character growth, Dotson showed how Ruby had changed over the years. After her brother was murdered near their old school Ruby's outlook changed. The resolution of Dotson story is when Ruby goes back to the school and that she wants to help others in her position and to keep their hearts and minds from closing.

4. In "Pearl Harbor" the surprise ending was after everything Alfred Preis went through during World War II he still continued to show his patriotism. He is also the architect who designed the USS Arizona memorial at Pearl Harbor.
